Search now gives answers as well as links
For years, a search worked the same way. A customer typed a question, saw ten blue links, and clicked a few. Your job was to rank on that page and earn the click.
That pattern is changing. Google now shows AI Overviews at the top of many results in India. These are short written answers built from several web pages, with links to the sources. At the same time, many people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity directly. They ask things like which dental clinic near Indiranagar does clear aligners, or what to check before booking a flat with a builder.
The customer often gets a usable answer without opening a single website. When they do click, they arrive with more context and a sharper question.
What this means for a business
Some simple informational searches will send fewer visitors. If someone only wants to know what GST rate applies to a service, an AI answer may satisfy them. That traffic was rarely your best traffic anyway.
Searches with buying intent still lead to websites. A person choosing a school, a hospital or a contractor wants to see the actual business. They want photos, prices or price ranges, locations, timings, and proof that you are real. AI answers tend to point them toward a short list. Your aim is to be on that list and to look like the safest choice once they arrive.
Three things follow from this.
- Being a source matters. AI systems pull from pages that answer a question clearly. Vague pages get skipped.
- Consistency matters. If your address, phone number and services differ across your website, Google Business Profile and directories, machines and people both lose confidence.
- The visit that does happen is worth more. Visitors arrive further along in their decision. Your page has to help them act.
What Google itself says
Google has stated that there is no special markup or trick needed to appear in AI Overviews. The same basics apply as for normal search. Pages must be indexable, useful, written for people, and technically sound. That is good news. The work that helps you in AI answers is the same work that helps you in regular rankings.
Practical steps for your website
1. Give every service its own clear page
A single page that lists twelve services in one paragraph is hard for anyone to quote. Create one page per main service. Each page should say plainly what the service is, who it is for, where you offer it, what it includes, and how to start.
Write the first paragraph so it could stand alone as an answer. For example, a physiotherapy clinic might open with the conditions it treats, the areas it serves and whether home visits are available.
2. Answer real questions on the page
Collect the questions your team hears on calls and WhatsApp every week. Put the honest answers on your website. Good questions are specific:
- Do you deliver outside the city, and how long does it take?
- Is the price inclusive of GST?
- Do you accept UPI, cards or EMI?
- What documents do I need for admission?
- Is the project RERA registered, and where can I check?
Place these questions near the service they relate to. A short FAQ block at the end of each service page works well.
3. Add structured data
Structured data is code that tells search engines what a page describes. It uses the vocabulary at schema.org. Useful types for most businesses include Organization or LocalBusiness, Product, Service, Article and BreadcrumbList.
Structured data does not guarantee a special result. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a narrow set of authoritative sites. It still helps search engines understand your pages correctly, so it is worth doing properly. The markup must match what visitors can see on the page.
4. Keep your business details consistent
Your business name, address, phone number, hours and website should be identical everywhere. Check these places:
- Your website footer and contact page
- Google Business Profile
- Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo or other directories relevant to your industry
- Social media profiles
- Invoices and letterheads that may be scanned and shared
When you move, change numbers or add a branch, update all of them on the same day.
5. Treat Google Business Profile as part of your website
For local businesses, the profile often appears before the website does. Fill every field. Pick accurate categories. Add real photos of your premises, team and work. Keep holiday hours current. Post updates when something changes. Answer the questions people ask on the profile.
6. Make pages fast and readable on phones
Most of your Indian visitors are on mobile, often on patchy connections. A page that takes several seconds to load loses people before they read a word. Compress images. Remove scripts you do not need. Make sure text is readable without zooming and buttons are easy to tap.
Search engines also need to read your content. If key text only appears after heavy scripts run, or sits inside images, it may be missed. Keep important content as plain text in the page.
7. Be specific enough to be quoted
AI answers favour statements that are concrete and checkable. Compare these two lines:
- We offer world-class interior solutions.
- We design and build modular kitchens and wardrobes in Bengaluru, with a 10-year warranty on carcass and a typical handover in 45 days.
The second line is useful to a customer and easy for a machine to repeat. Use real numbers that you can stand behind: years in business, service areas, turnaround times, warranty terms, price ranges. If a number changes, update it.
8. Earn and answer reviews
Reviews on Google and industry platforms shape both AI answers and human choices. Ask happy customers for a review at the right moment, such as after delivery or a successful treatment. Make it easy with a direct link sent on WhatsApp. Reply to every review, including the critical ones, calmly and with facts. Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks platform rules and customers can usually tell.
9. Show who is behind the business
People and search systems both look for signs of trust. Add an about page with real information. Show your registered business name, GST number where relevant, licences or registrations, and the people who lead the work. For health, finance and legal topics, name the qualified person who wrote or reviewed the content.
A quick checklist
- One clear page for each main service or product line
- A plain first paragraph on each page that answers what, who, where and how
- A short FAQ on each key page, using real customer questions
- Structured data that matches the visible content
- Identical name, address, phone and hours across all listings
- A complete, current Google Business Profile with real photos
- Fast mobile pages with important text in plain HTML
- Specific, checkable facts in place of slogans
- A steady flow of genuine reviews, each one answered
- A visible about page with registrations and named experts
What to measure now
Total traffic alone tells you less than before. Look at enquiries, calls, WhatsApp messages and form submissions. Watch which pages lead to those actions. In Google Search Console, check impressions as well as clicks, since you may appear in more searches even when fewer people click. Ask new customers how they found you, and note when they mention an AI assistant.
The short version
AI answers reward businesses that explain themselves clearly and consistently. If your website already answers customer questions in plain language, you are in a good position. If it is mostly slogans and stock photos, now is the time to fix it.
